Market Garden

2018 is an exciting year for the Thrift Farm Market Garden as it enters its first full growing season and work on opening to visitors is well underway, with the unveiling in early June 2018.

The creation of the Market Garden has been fully led by all the clients that have worked to choose varieties, plant seeds, tend to the plants, harvest, collect and package the produce as well as completely renovating the site where raised beds have been built, a lovely pergola has been erected and several tonnes of compost have been turned into productive growing beds.

As well as providing a fantastic space for our clients to learn about all things green, the aim of the Market Garden is to be able to harvest fresh seasonal produce all year round. The clients have chosen a range of vegetables from courgettes to broad beans and tomatoes to parsnips that they would like to grow and this information has been used to create the growing programme for 2018/19.

The produce from the Market Garden will be used to supply the Food for Thought Café on site, local restaurants and be available for sale in the café and through the Market Garden Veg Box scheme.

Once open the Market Garden aims to be an informative and educational space for visitors to see where food comes from and how it changes through the seasons. To mark the opening two talks will be held at Thrift Farm:

9th of June: Charles Dowding will be discussing his “No Dig” Gardening, the method adopted by the Market Garden – tickets are on sale now, £18 per person

16th of June: a talk about Stowe from Barry Smith the head gardener of the National Trust property

For further information about the exciting development of the Market Garden or the talks being held please contact the Farm Office on 01908 501733 or at thriftfarm@buckscc.gov.uk.

Just some of the great feedback we’ve received.

Thrift Farm is brilliant. I came here years ago when my teens were toddlers, and decided to come back again with my younger kids, aged 6 and 8. The Farm is very well laid out, and there are plenty of animals to see. The hatchery with the baby Guinea pigs was my favourite!
